Benefits of a Private Cloud

Security was one of the defining topics for the flexible workspace industry last year and is set to play a key role again in 2020. Through using the right tools such as a private cloud network, you can ensure that your workspace is secure and compliant and that your members are protected.

What Exactly is a Private Cloud

You’ve most likely used cloud computing or a public cloud in one way or another before. Whether it’s your information stored on a google account or photos uploaded using iCloud. These types of cloud resources are operated by third party cloud service providers such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure which are shared by other organisations.

A private cloud, however is used exclusively by one organisation and dedicated solely to a single business. Private clouds are often used by companies such as banks, governmental bodies or those needed enhanced control over their environment. With flexible workspaces members beginning to require stricter security regulations – it’s becoming increasingly important to consider private cloud networks.

How a Private Cloud Benefits Your Workspace

Your workspace is secure and you’re in control. Double win. While the high security standard is key, the enhanced levels of control that a private cloud network grants your workspace is an important benefit.

For example, a Private Cloud grants you increased control over your traffic. This means that services such as voice and access control systems which require low latency to delivery timely communications can be prioritised ensuring optimal quality is delivered to the end-user.

Additionally some private cloud providers will apply standard security profiles across all flexible workspaces that operate under their network. This means that if someone from one of your workspaces heads over to a meeting at another workspace you manage, their security profile will be the same meaning that you can have confidence that the same security standards run across your portfolio.

How a Private Cloud Benefits Your Members

They’re protected and they’re secure. Another double win. Security concerns are peaking not just with operators but also with members and fears of private data being accessed are high. With a private cloud network, your members can be assured that their devices and data are safe.

For example, let’s say in your workspace – a less than savoury character comes in for a day and they’re intending to try and access your guest WiFi. If you’re operating without a private cloud network, they might be able access your public network and see a multitude of the other devices connected, giving them a simple path to start accessing what should be private devices and data. However, if you’re using a private cloud network with secure WiFi authentication, the only devices they’d be able to see would be public accessible printers. Infinitely better than having your members private devices data right there for the taking.

Why ISO Certifications Matter

ISO certifications (or SOC2 in the US) is a badge of honour for suppliers which means that the certified supplier has been externally reviewed and been given accreditation highlighting that they’re operating to the internationally recognised security and compliance standards.

These certifications are important things to look out for if your workspace is aiming to host corporations with strict compliance regulations. For example, if a large corporation such as a bank or government body is looking for a space within your building, they’ll be on the lookout to see if your technology provider is ISO27001 certified so that they can be sure that their data and information will remain confidential and secure.

Even if you’re not planning on letting out space to companies with strict compliance regulations, it’s wise to be on the lookout for technology providers with ISO certifications (or equivalent) so that you can be assured that their compliance standards are at the highest level keeping your workspace far away from security risks.

Security was one of the biggest narratives surrounding the flexible workspace industry last year and the ramifications were felt by a number of operators within the market.

Its importance hasn’t diminished, it has grown. It is imperative that your workspace is on a (secure) front foot as the sector makes its way into a new decade.
